JUNTERESSLI
BRYYS.
FROM CORTÈGE
INTO THE PARCOURS.
There are moments when an idea becomes a movement – and can sometimes even create a new tradition. This is exactly what happened with the ‘Junteressli-Bryys’, which was awarded for the first time in Basel in 2024 as part of the U25 competitions. It began as an idea – to create a special, lasting prize for young riders. What makes it so special? This unique prize builds a bridge between the world of equestrian sport and the Basel Carnival.
Anyone who has grown up in Basel and is gripped by carnival fever will be familiar with the ‘Junteressli’. In the past, these were horsemen on real horses who rode through the city at the head of the large carnival cliques – dignified, traditional, a symbol of pride. Riding and the use of horses in the parade are now largely a thing of the past, but the figurehead has not disappeared. On the contrary, the ‘Junteressli’ has remained – as a carnival figure artfully crafted with great imagination from papier-mâché, wood, fabric and wire. Lovingly created and carried with pride, it remains to this day an integral part of some of the major cliques and a symbol of the Basel Carnival, which has been an official UNESCO World Heritage event since 2017.
This rich tradition and special connection to the city of Basel served as the inspiration and starting point for the design of the new prize. A simple medal or a small jug would be out of the question – what was needed was something with soul, something that reflects the significance of the U25 competitions whilst also serving as a symbol for the region. It soon became clear: the ‘Junteressli’ was the one.
Together with graphic designer Domo Löw and the experienced gold and silversmith Bernhard Lang, the idea was brought to life. Sketches, cardboard models, drawings and prototypes were produced. There were discussions, refinements, rejections and further developments – until finally a prize was created that is as unique as its name. Lovingly crafted by hand, the miniature ‘Junteressli’ will be presented in future at every U25 award ceremony – engraved with the winner’s name as a lasting memento.
The fact that this prize has become a reality is due in no small part to the Straumann family’s long-standing commitment. For years, they have been passionately dedicated to supporting young talent in equestrian sport – both in and outside the arena. The ‘Junteressli-Bryys’ is a testament to this support – and at the same time a gift to Basel.
Incidentally, the original Junteressli has found its place at our tournament in Basel: visitors can admire it standing proudly at the top of the main entrance stairs. And to the left and right of the ‘Black Horse Club’, two life-size ‘Junteressli’ – just like the ones paraded at Fasnacht – gaze curiously into the arena, almost as if they wanted to have their say in the sporting competition themselves. Naturally, the original Junteressli never leaves the city of Basel.
Just as with the ‘Golden Drum’, the winners’ names will be engraved for posterity on a plaque attached to the figure. In 2026 it will be presented for the third time: the ‘Junteressli-Bryys’. Rooted in the past, made for the future. A trophy that not only honours sporting achievements, but also brings a piece of Basel’s identity into the modern world of equestrian sport. And who knows – perhaps this idea will indeed grow into a tradition, just as the ‘Golden Drum’ has done.
